Artist: Roger Daltrey Date of Concert: 11/5/2009 Location: Rama, On, Canada
just saw him 2 hous ago at casino rama, and he was amazing. i could be one of those people who complain about the voice of an old rock start but like he said himself tonight "i dont think i need to prove i can sing anymore". it was great to be able to see him play and i thought he sounded great for doing what he does for so long. his stage presence was that of a human being, he laughed, swore, danced, swang his mic, coversed with the audience showing that he isnt some stuck up rock star who doesnt care where they are. 10/10

Artist: Hildur Gudnadottir Date of Concert: 11/4/2009 Location: Portland, OR, USA
FULL REVIEW with Múm @ Aladdin Theater at: http://jazzsick.wordpress.com/2009/11/05/mum-in-portland09/ [pic] The first opener Hildur Guðnadóttir is one of Múm’s vocalists and did a 20-minute instrumental set. She came out and played an initial song with just her on cello and laptop accompaniment. The next song, she was joined by Sin Fang Bous’s drummer, and Múm’s bassist and trumpet player. Her trumpeter played mostly what I’d call “empty notes” – a lot of wind and sputtering through the horn. On Hildur’s second song, I thought, “there must be something about the Icelandic landscape that yields such magnificent music.” The song was utterly gorgeous, flowing, almost glacial. Her next two songs to wrap up her set were also gorgeous, but, wow, that second song really made me want to visit Iceland. Her debut solo album is called Without Sinking and is available here. ~Dan

FULL REVIEW with Múm @ Aladdin Theater at: http://jazzsick.wordpress.com/2009/11/05/mum-in-portland09/ Up next, Sin Fang Bous is a side project from Sindri Sigfússon from Seabear. They played a 30 minute set that started off OK, but not all that that great. BUT… by the end, I was really digging it. The music was much louder than Múm and Hildur, and Sindri was also much more mumbly. He was speaking in English, but when he announced song songs early on it was all a mash. Near the middle of the set, his humor came out, which definitely helped me warm up to them. “How come no one is sitting up there? (looking at the box seats) Is that for the King of Portland?“ [pic] Later on he also announced that he had CDs, t-shirts… and little vials of blood for sale at the merch table if we wanted something to drink on the way home. Silly. I think my favorite song was “Clangour and Flutes” (from the Clangour album available here). Anyway, it had a nice hook and some nice instrumentation. ~Dan

Artist: Mum Date of Concert: 11/4/2009 Location: Portland, OR, USA
FULL REVIEW with PICTURES at: http://jazzsick.wordpress.com/2009/11/05/mum-in-portland09/ [pic] There must be something about the Icelandic landscape that yields such magnificent music. I got into Múm (pronounced “moom”) via Sigur Rós. In fact, it may have even been a direct email from Sigur Rós about Múm right around the time Finally We Are No One (aka Loksins Erum Við Engin) was coming out in 2003. Both bands are from Iceland, both bands have quirky, sometimes ambient songs. Where Múm differs from Sigur Rós is that they tend to be less ethereal and have more electronic, glitchiness going on with their music. They came through Portland a couple of years ago on their last album, Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy, but I was not able to make it to the show. Ever since hearing their albums, I have been curious how they’d pull it off in a live setting. After a delicious vegan dinner at the new Irvington Blossoming Lotus restaurant (represent!), I got to the Aladdin right as doors were opening (a little after 8pm) and got a seat right up front. Yay! [pic] The first opener Hildur Guðnadóttir is one of Múm’s vocalists and did a 20-minute instrumental set. She came out and played an initial song with just her on cello and laptop accompaniment. The next song, she was joined by Sin Fang Bous’s drummer, and Múm’s bassist and trumpet player. Silly. I think my favorite song was “Clangour and Flutes” (from the Clangour album available here). Anyway, it had a nice hook and some nice instrumentation. [pic] Múm went on just before 10:30. I had never seen them before; so I had no idea what to expect. Several of the people up on stage had already been up there before. Hildur as the opener, the keyboardist/trumpter as Hildur’s back-up, their guitarist was also Sin Fang Bous’s guitarist. It was like a little Icelandic traveling family. When Múm came on, the front area without seats quickly filled up… so I got out of my seat and got a spot right at the stage. [pic] [pic] Múm’s set was a lot of newer songs (of which I hadn’t heard) – happy, electronic with ambient / chamber music elements. I had no idea they had multiple singers (Hildur, another woman, and a guy who also played keyboards, guitar, etc). Don’t ask on names… it’s too difficult. :) With two keyboardists, Múm’s electronic sounds came through in the live setting… definitely not as lush as the studio versions, but definitely commendable for a live setting. I think, not as expected, the vocals were the primary flavor in the live show. Hildur and the other woman singer were definitely passionate and singing their lungs out. Here’s what the played (any help on missing / incorrect info is appreciated)… [pic] Setlist: about 85-90 minutes * Illuminated * Marmalade Fires * Húllabbalabbalúú * Blessed Brambles * If I Were A Fish * Nightly Cares * A Little Bit Sometimes * maybe The Last Shapes Of Never * Show Me * unknown… sweeping, operatic, lots of “la-las” * Dancing Behind My Eyelids * unknown… kazoos near the end * Prophecies And Reversed Memories * Sing Along * Encore: Green Grass Of Tunnel [pic] I left about midway through the last song, as I had a 2 hour drive, a hard week already, and an early meeting in the morning. All in all, it was a GREAT show. It wasn’t as monumental / mind-blowing as the first time I saw Sigur Rós, or anything like that, but it was a really great band playing really great music. I’m glad that they’ve been through twice these past two years… I look forward to another trip from them in the near future. ~Dan

Artist: George Jones Date of Concert: 10/2/2009 Location: florence, sc
hey jeffmikey, you hit the nail on the head!!!!! absolutely a waste! and you folks who say we should be ashamed for writing a bad review. ive spent alot of money on jones over the years, but because he is a legend doesnt give him or anyone else the right to keep charging ridiculous prices for a very sub par show. i wish jones the best and more power to him for being able to still pack them in. unfortunately, i feel that more people would agree with me than you. you people must be tone deaf. if you wanna go see some legends who can still sing, go see haggard, ray price, gene watson, the oaks, willie (sometimes) or if youre looking for great country go see dale watson. to everyone, just go to youtube george jones 2009, its very obvious. by the way, why cant all these old guys be smart like cash was. when he realized he couldnt perform anymore, he quit!!!!!! then , he focused ALL his energy toward recording and made some of the best music of his career.

Artist: The Marshall Tucker Band Date of Concert: 10/23/2009 Location: westbury, ny, usa
marshall tucker band's performance on 10/23/09 at westbury was awesome as always. i catch their show at least 2-3 times a year and have seen them the last few years at this venue. this time they were with charlie daniels band, who's always fun as well. but, mtb rocked way harder. they always play most of their hits, and the musicians are great. the sax player is amazing, who also plays flute and keyboards. also, the lead guitarist with the cowboy hat is incredible. he sounded just like toy caldwell from the original band. doug gray is so kind. i walked up to the third row during can't you see, and i think he recognized me cause he looked right at me and pointed, then threw one of his tambourines, which i'll always have as a keepsake to one of my favorite bands of all time. keep on rockin!

Artist: The Black Crowes Date of Concert: 7/23/2008 Location: St. Louis, Misourri. Live off the levee
Black Crowes are by far my favorite band, and thats for a reason. That reason is they are some of the best musicians who play some of the best Rock n Roll. If you like radio music, listen to the radio and don't go to the concert. If you're a true fan you'll know the songs they're playing, and you'll also know that when they play live they do a lot of covers. The covers they do are typically not the most common songs out there. Furthermore, if you're a true Crowes fan you'll still love seeing them live even if you don't know the song. The Black Crowes are probably one of the most loyal bands to their fans and in turn is why they probably have one of the most loyal fan bases(that is true fans). So in short, if all you want to hear is remedy, she talks to angels, twice as hard and jealous again, buy their greatest hits and shut up. Don't buy the tickets to the concert so that way someone who will really appreciate their music will have a chance to get in.

Artist: The Allman Brothers Band Date of Concert: 10/21/2009 Location: Clearwater, FL, USA
Wow, this concert was surreal. I am an Allman Brothers Band fan but this show just surpassed anything they had done before. As it turns out it, this was the last show on their 40th Anniversary tour and they pulled it all out. This show was not for the casual fan, but for true fans like me it was a special gift that I will always treasure. They may not have played all my favorite songs but what they did play was other worldly and magnificent. They had a guest keyboardist, Bruce Katz, who will be playing with Gregg Allman and Friends, who was just fantastic. When they would start to go completely out there I would hear these notes that were not familiar and it was the keyboardist and he would bring me right back into the moment so I didn't miss anything. Superb show in a beautiful venue and a lasting tribute to 40 years of Allman Brothers Band history.

Artist: Powerman 5000 Date of Concert: 11/3/2009 Location: New York, NY
Saw Powerman 5000 at the Gramercy theatre in NYC (Awesome Venue!!) Powerman killed it, they were just awesome. Heard some old songs and some new ones too, the crowd liked the new ones which was good to see. The best part was when they put on the flashing light helmets. Opening act DEAD SUPERSTAR was off the hook too, they really impressed a lot of people who seemed to know nothing about them, but they won over the crowd. Powerman and Dead Superstar both kicked @$$

Artist: Fast Paced Action Packed Date of Concert: 9/22/2009 Location: Seattle, WA
This is their "about me" section on Myspace and it is right on! Imagine this: In the blue corner, weighing in at a combined 2049 pounds when wet, we have Mastodon, The Sword, and Black Sabbath. Fighting out of the red corner, weighing in at 1,532 pounds, Neil Young, Queen, and the Beatles. This will be a 12 round fight to the death... The bloody remains of the music these bands are known for will be scraped up and re-assembled into a new genre of music... music like nothing you have ever heard. It will be rock and roll; it will be classical; it will be metal; there will be vocal harmonies and guitar solos up the ass. There will be an unprecedented usage of Head Bands. It will be loud, dynamic, melodic, and technical. It will be: FAST-PACED ACTION-PACKED You have to go hear these guys when you get a chance, as the technical, heavy rock, metal edged music with Neil Young style vocals are the formation of something new and exciting! We need new and exciting-it's time for some new rock gods-it's time for: FAST-PACED ACTION-PACKED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Artist: John Cleese Date of Concert: 10/30/2009 Location: Modesto, CA, USA
Entering the stage to the tune of Monty Pyrhon an kicking off the US leg of his How To Finance Your Divorce Tour, Cleese's admitted he was doing shows because, "frankly I need the money!" He then began a diatribe of how his former wife ("the love child of Bernie Madoff and Heather Mills") and her attorney (an Ork - complete with photo comparison!) won a settlement to the tune of $20 Million in California divorce court. It was funnier than hell and for about 2 hours, he didn't let up. His not so slight dark humor continued as he spoke of growing up in Weston-super-Mare, England, of family life, school days, college days (where he met Graham Chapman), radio, TV writing for David Frost, Marty Feldman and ultimately how he, Chapman, Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam began Monty Python's Flying Circus. He also spoke of movies - Holy Grail, Life of Brian, Fish Called Wanda, Fierce Creatures, Silverado... etc. Along the way were clips from and comments about Python, Fawlty Towers, Frost, the 1948 Show, etc. Cleese was classy and entertaining, engaging and hilarious. He has an easy manner on stage and interacts well with the crowd - his 30 minute question and answer period closed the show. I'd strongly recommend catching his show... it's not just a lot of spam, spam, spam...
