Still Cruisin' After All These Years...They may have some mileage, and there may only be one original Beach Boy, and it may well be almost 48 years since the original Beach Boys made their first appearance on stage, but this version proved once again that they still have the goods. Kudos for putting together a VERY impressive line-up of talented backup musicians to do justice to the original recordings! Before they took the stage, I noticed that there was an extra drum set in the back -- and an extra microphone stand at the front of the stage (I had a good idea why)...As the original recording of 'Surfin' played, the backup musicians (Tim Bonhomme, John Cowsill, Randell Kirsch, Scott Totten, Christian Love, and quietly, special guest, John Stamos) took their positions on stage. Then Bruce walked on to louder applause, motioning for the crowd to stand, as 'THE BEACH BOY' Mike Love walked on, grinning, waving to the crowd... and they played and sang the finish of 'Surfin', then quickly dove into 'Surfin Safari'.. Then one hit after another (over 2 full hours, 43 songs in all). It took awhile before the crowd realized that John Stamos was in the back drumming for the first few songs, but then he strutted to the front, waved, and grabbed a guitar and stepped to a mike to a HUGE ovation..I could give a song-by-song report (in fact, I have the set list, if anyone is interested) -- but I'll note a few highlights -- Randell Kirsch totally nailed the falsettos (Don't Worry baby, Hawaii), the car medley was fantastic, culminating of course with 'I Get Around'...John Stamos sung his version of Dennis Wilson's GREAT ballad, 'Forever'...they harmonized so well on an impressive A Capella, 'Their Hearts Were Full of Spring'...Mike (and John) engaged in playful banter throughout, with Mike, as usual, flirting and smiling, waving at practically every women in the first ten rows... for the whole show, probably 40 or so beach balls were bouncing around the crowd, and of course, many made their way on stage, where the musicians would kick them back into the crowd....A humorous intro to 'Be True To Your School' with Mike saying it was a patriotic song, dedicated to 'Women in Uniform' (specifically, cheerleader uniforms!) -- them Mike and John Stamos engaged in some playful banter about it being recorded in 1963 (with John replying that he was BORN in 1963!)... Then Mike sang a long first note, finally singing 'When some loud braggart tries to put you down, and says his school is great, I tell'em right away, now whatsamatter buddy, aint you heard of my school' at which time John went into a long, impressive drum solo, with Mike feigning irritation about it, then on with the song!...then on song #30, once the opening notes of 'California Girls' were belted out, it was a non-stop series, with the entire crowd on their feet thru the remainder of the show -- highlighted with 'Barbara Ann', when the entire stage was filled with guest kids, singing and dancing with the band...then as 'Surfin USA' ended, Mike looked at this watch, and they all waved, and started to leave the stage, but John Cowsill stayed at his drums, banging away....Mike and Bruce tried to motion for John to leave, but he kept drumming, so they all came back, and drove into 'Summertime Blues' (with John Stamos handling the 'deep voice' parts (e.g 'I'd like to help you son, but you're too young to vote!!!).. then of course the grand finale, 'Fun Fun Fun'....and the crowd had to be as exhausted as the musicians... Can't wait til next year's visit.. (p.s. if interested in the set-list, email me -- bobmala56@hotmail.com)

We saw the fantastic Beach Boys in tiny Fairfield, Iowa, home of Maharishi University of Management where 3300 folks practice Transcendental Meditation. The group's sound, both singing and instrumentally was excellent and created a powerful emotional high for the 3500 singing along. I was immediately carried back to junior high and high school and loved every moment of the concert.
