Live music is my hobby and at each concert I buy or make my way to the front, not because I want to see the band up close and we all know the sound isn’t that great up there…but that is where the fun is. Up front you find the dedicated fans. Those fans who know all the words. Those fans who know the characters on stage. Those fans who want to show you why they love their band. Casino Rama was my first KISS concert and WOW the KISS Army is a great group of fans. We laughed, danced and sang along all night long. If you have never seen KISS live, may I suggest you get a ticket, wriggle your way in the midst of the KISS Army and enjoy the ride known as KISS live! And by the way, the KISS Army comes in all ages, shapes and sizes and is all over the stadium, not just up front. I will do this again! In fact I have tickets for next month!

Date of Concert: 10/16/2009 | Location: Hampton, VA, USA

    KISS, Buckcherry
    Fri. Oct. 16, 2009
    Hampton Coliseum, VA

“Sonic Boom” is the title of the first new KISS studio album in 11 years and there is nothing like a 3 hour road trip to Hampton Coliseum in Virginia to give you the time to test drive the CD.

When you cross the state line into VA several scenarios rush through your brain such as: I wonder what their lottery jackpot is up to, or, maybe gas is cheaper up here, to possibly, I would sure hate getting locked-up out of State.

I have never been to the Hampton Coliseum and hitting something new is a part of the total entertainment package. As you approach the venue there are eating places and hotels well within walking distance and yet another perk: no parking fees.

The Coliseum looks like a round spaceship, with vertical indentions all around, everything is lit up and the back side is surrounded by water.

The tickets, the signs posted on the doors and the workers I called at the venue all said: “No Cameras”, so trying not to get locked-up out of State I complied but to my lack of amusement there were no metal detectors and a lot of people had their equipment to create their Kodak moments but not me.

The tale that people should not wear a shirt to the concert that has the band on it that is playing the show gets blown out of the water at a KISS Event; KISS merchandise is being worn everywhere.

There were four merchandise stands and the lines were thick and long all night with people ringing the cash register to the extent that it sounded like a stuck alarm bell. If you did not come in KISS face paint there was a booth for that too which made it all like Halloween come early with everyone wearing their wildest.

Buckcherry was the opener and came out of the gate with “Tired Of You”. Lead Singer Josh Todd is no shrinking violet, although he might have one of those tattooed somewhere on his torso because everything seems to be covered and it would be fitting since the band met at a tattoo shop.

After the second song most of the members started removing clothes and Josh said, “It’s Friday night Let’s Party” and went into their song “I Love The Cocaine”.

These guys are use to headlining and know how to rock you so after a 40 minute set with a Deep Purple cover everyone was ready for Round 2 of tonight’s Action Adventure.

The voice from behind the KISS logo’ed black curtain across the stage front roared through the venue with the famous words: “You Wanted The Best, You Got The Best, The Hottest Band In The World: KISS!” and the curtain crashes down and KISS kicks off the night of Rock and Roll with: “Deuce”.

Behind them was a huge diamond vision screen running the complete length of the stage, from the bottom of that downward were three rows of stacked light boxes that resembled amps but could project any image and below that was one long row of amps. On the front of the drum riser was the “KISS” logo lit up in flashing/moving lights.

This “ALIVE 35 TOUR” has Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons in their normal Rock Star positions, with Eric Singer on Drums and Tommy Thayer on Lead Guitar. Gene was wearing shiny chrome upper armor and chrome boots with the demon teeth platform soles.

All the guitar players formed a close line in front of the stage rocking left to right together to the music and Paul yelled, “Let Me Hear You!” and 8 flame throwers burnt their way towards the ceiling and BOOMING Explosions were pounding you with their concussions then they hit us with Weapon 2 in the Rock Assault: “Strutter”.

Few can work the crowd like Paul Stanley; Paul, “Hampton, you might not be the biggest crowd but you could be the loudest! You want to hear the classics, well here we go” and Gene sang, “Let Me Go Rock ‘n’ Roll”.

The band is in huge platform shoes and they dance around in these things all night and there are many girls here, some guys, trying to wear the same thing but they seem to be doing a lot of limping. It must be an acquired skill.

Paul, “Tomorrow night we are hitting Greenville South Carolina” – crowd boos – “but you’ve got to make sure tonight we’re thinking about you!” and Paul divides the crowd down the middle and leads each side in trying to raise the most h_ll.

Paul, “We are going to make this place ‘Hotter Than H_ll’ and you can pretty much guess that was the title of the next song which during this portion is when Gene does his flame throwing act and I have to judge that I have seen him blast bigger plumes of fire.

Paul, “I can remember being here in 1979, Hampton has been with us a long time” and then they played the only song off the new CD that they would play all night, “Modern Day Delilah”. Shocking, when most bands force feed the new stuff to you beyond any hope of you being able to keep it down, KISS played one and it was 5 songs in.

Bruce/Ace played his guitar, sat it down as it kept playing that last note, picked up his pyrotechnic loaded guitar aimed it for the ceiling and a roman candle rocket shot out the neck striking a row of lights in the rafters which then crashed to the stage with fire and smoke all around.

Paul Stanley, “We’re going to play 100 – 1000, now Hampton we’ve been coming here enough for you to know, I remember being here on New Year’s Eve” and the crowd roared: “100,000 YEARS!” and we were off riding the same song.

Eric Singer with his drum solo and the lights around him went Super Nova WHITE blinding everyone but you could not look away. Paul swinging his mic around by the cord like a lasso then winding it up around his neck and Gene now playing his bass that looks like an actual Axe and all the while massive towers of flames were filling the air. It was like trying to watch everything in a three ring circus.

Paul Stanley landed the Thor hammer blow of the night with, “Bad News if you came here to hear about how to ‘Save The Planet’ or ‘Save The Whale’. We are here tonight to forget all that and ‘ROCK AND ROLL ALL NIGHT’ AND PARTY EVERY DAY” and white glittering confetti shot from four cannons and filled the venue and the band and crowd energy being emitted must have been rocking boats in the bay.

It was a 1970’s, Glitter Rock, Rock and Roll Spectacular Freak Show. Just like we hoped it would be.

Against my better judgment I went to the show. I was hoping they would keep to the alleged promise to do a fan routed tour, but they did not. Manchester, New Hampshire finished much higher than Boston in the poll, yet they opted for Boston and dissed the Manchester, NH fans for a bigger market, bigger venue and more mula. Can you say backfire?? The place was half empty and I must say it was pretty funny to watch the almost dead crowd try to cheer for the band. It was quite evident that the Manchester area fans kept their promise not to travel to Boston to see the show. I thought the show was OK at best and was pretty lame in my opinion. I was not too impressed with the set list and they did not sound that great in my opinion. I go to many shows and this will not be one to remember, except for the fact the place was empty and hope they felt like crap for bailing on the Manchester crowd.

My third time seeing them and will be my last time. Just my 2 cents...
